Tripadvisor API for reviews: what the Content API gives you, and how to read all your reviews
The Tripadvisor API for developers is the Tripadvisor Content API. It returns up to 5 of the most recent reviews per location, gives you 5,000 free calls a month, and has no endpoint to reply to reviews. If you run hotels, restaurants or attractions and need every review of your own listings in your code, Prisma’s Tripadvisor connector (beta) reads the full public reviews of the listings you add and returns them in the same JSON as Google and Trustpilot.
Tripadvisor is included from the Beam plan. Google, App Store, Google Play, Judge.me and Trustpilot are free for 2 locations.
How the official Tripadvisor Content API works
The Content API is built to put Tripadvisor content on your site or app: a location’s details, its rating, a few reviews and photos, always credited to Tripadvisor (overview).
Endpoints
| Endpoint | What it does |
|---|---|
| Location Search | Find a location ID by name |
| Nearby Location Search | Find locations near coordinates |
| Location Details | Name, address, rating and more for one location |
| Location Reviews | Up to 5 of the most recent reviews |
| Location Photos | Up to 5 photos |
The reviews call is a GET on https://api.content.tripadvisor.com/api/v1/location/{locationId}/reviews, with your key in the key query parameter and an optional language (default en), limit and offset (reference).
curl "https://api.content.tripadvisor.com/api/v1/location/LOCATION_ID/reviews?key=YOUR_TRIPADVISOR_KEY&language=en"Whatever limit you send, you get up to 5 reviews. Tripadvisor’s reference says beta subscribers have different limits and must upgrade for more, without publishing the higher numbers.
Tripadvisor API key and pricing
You sign up, choose a maximum daily budget and add a credit card. The first 5,000 calls each month are free. After that you pay per call, with the per-call price dropping as volume grows; Tripadvisor shows the price chart at checkout and on the My Plans page. Above 500,000 calls a month you have to contact sales (Content API FAQ).
Rate limits
- Up to 50 calls per second.
- A daily call limit set by the budget you choose. You can change it on My Plans.
- Calls beyond the daily limit return HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests).
- Limits reset at midnight UTC.
- Search endpoints allow up to 10,000 calls per day.
Attribution
You must credit Tripadvisor wherever you show its content, using the logo and bubble rating images included in the JSON, following Tripadvisor’s Display Requirements.
What the Tripadvisor API doesn’t tell you
- Five reviews is a widget, not a dataset. A hotel with 3,000 reviews still gets 5 back. You can’t track sentiment, alert on a 1-star review from last night, or report on a month.
- No replies. None of the five endpoints writes anything. Owner responses are managed from your Tripadvisor account, by hand.
- The credit card comes first. Even on the free 5,000 calls, overage is billed to the card you add, so set the daily budget before testing in a loop.
- Display rules shape your UI. Logo, bubble rating and attribution are mandatory. If you wanted the data for internal reporting, read the terms first.
- It doesn’t know which locations are yours. The Content API reads any location. Nothing proves ownership, and nothing gives you more data because you own it.
Read your Tripadvisor reviews with Prisma
Prisma is a unified reviews API for the businesses and apps you own or manage. Tripadvisor support is in beta. You add the public Tripadvisor page of each hotel, restaurant or attraction you own; no Tripadvisor login is shared with Prisma. Prisma reads the full public reviews of that listing through a data provider (rating, title, original text, reviewer and management response) and checks for new ones on a schedule set by your plan. Details on the Tripadvisor reviews API page.
1. Connect a Tripadvisor listing
curl -X POST https://api.prismareviews.com/v1/connections \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PRISMA_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"platform": "tripadvisor", "listing_url": "https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d000000-Reviews-Your_Hotel-San_Francisco_California.html"}'2. Read the reviews
curl "https://api.prismareviews.com/v1/reviews?platform=tripadvisor&location_id=loc_456&since=2026-10-01" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PRISMA_API_KEY"{
"data": [
{
"id": "rev_7h2m",
"platform": "tripadvisor",
"location_id": "loc_456",
"rating": 4,
"title": "Great location, noisy street side",
"text": "Staff were lovely and breakfast was excellent. Ask for a courtyard room if you're a light sleeper.",
"author": "Anna K.",
"language": "en",
"created_at": "2026-10-09T08:15:00Z",
"reply": null,
"url": "https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-..."
}
],
"next_cursor": null
}3. Answer from the review link
Every review includes url, the link to answer it on Tripadvisor. The Content API has no reply endpoint, so Prisma is read only here: it doesn’t publish replies on Tripadvisor. The owner answers in Tripadvisor’s Management Center. If your code calls the reply endpoint for a Tripadvisor review anyway, Prisma returns 422:
curl -X POST https://api.prismareviews.com/v1/reviews/rev_7h2m/reply -H "Authorization: Bearer $PRISMA_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"text": "Thanks for the feedback."}'{
"error": {
"code": "reply_not_supported",
"message": "Tripadvisor has no reply API for third parties, so Prisma only reads its reviews. Answer this one on the platform: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-...",
"platform": "tripadvisor",
"url": "https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-..."
}
}Subscribe to the review.created webhook to hear about new reviews without polling.
